East Avenue is Chinese rap artist Masiwei’s first solo documentary released via 88rising. The documentary tells the story of Masiwei’s hometown roots in Pixian, a district on the outskirts of Chengdu best known for its doubanjiang, a type of spicy fermented bean sauce. After the rise to fame of Masiwei’s rap group, the Higher Brothers, Pixian now has another claim to fame – as a mecca of Chinese hip hop.

The name of the documentary, East Avenue, is also the title of a single from Masiwei’s latest album, Dark Horse, and refers to the main street in Pixian where he and his childhood friends spent most of their time growing up. Shot in seven days across Pixian and Chengdu city, the documentary explores the meaning of friendship, coming of age, and chasing big dreams in small town.
The production process was a delicate balancing act of being goal-oriented enough to capture the material that we needed, while also being open to the flow of the moment, which allowed our subjects to open up and give us a more intimate portrait of their lives and thoughts.
